Tomorrow is December 7th. It’ll probably be just another day for many, but for Selene it is the much anticipated due date for her baby girl when she’ll finally be able to hold the tiny infant in her arms.

While we were in Mexico, my team and I would walk to Selene’s house each day to visit (to the best of our limited Spanish-speaking abilities), mow the lawn, paint the house’s exterior, play with Galilea (Selene’s daughter wearing a white shirt), teach them how to play Go Fish with cards, or even be fed some of her amazingly good-tasting food just because she wanted to cook for us. Hugo, her husband, often worked during this time, so we didn’t get to see him very often; however, he is quite the hilarious character who takes after his father.

This family quickly became dear to all of our hearts, and we wished that it would’ve been possible for us to welcome another member. Since we could not be there to see the baby girl (who will be named America), Jenny, Cait, and I decided to throw Selene a baby shower. None of us had ever done such a thing before. We had 4 days to plan the party. Plus, half the guests couldn’t speak English, while the other half couldn’t speak Spanish. Hmm…this could be a more daunting task than we first thought. Despite these obstacles, we did it with the help of advice from other females, lists, the convenience of game ideas online, and the grace of God.

Our masterpiece consisted of a layer of chocolate cake, chocolate frosting, another layer of chocolate cake, chocolate frosting, one more layer (that makes 3 in all) of chocolate cake, all smothered with more chocolate frosting. Selene le encanta (loves) chocolate; therefore, we gave her chocolate.

When we first met Selene, she told us that they had practically nothing for the baby (of whose gender they were not yet aware) except a crib and some diapers. The gifts she received at the shower helped remedy the situation, as they contained cute outfits, bibs, blankets, and other baby items.

While the adults competed in a baby trivia game, the kids colored and drew pretty pictures.
The little girl in the left picture above, named Itzel,
used to frequently wonder over to Selene’s house
whenever we were there. Shy Itzel is such an
adorable girl with an indescribably cute smile.

  1. Becca,
Thanks for the reminder that today is Selene’s due date! I’m still in Georgia but head back to Mexico tomorrow. I’ll have to stop over to Selene’s after I get back, and I’ll let you know if America has been born yet. I hope the ministry in South Africa is off to a good start. I look forward to more updates. God bless!

  2. Becca,
Selene is in the office right now! She has not had the baby yet though. I’ll be sure to tell you when she does. 🙂
